Charles is a director, dramaturge, and theatre maker. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Directing from the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) and an Advanced Diploma of Arts in Acting from the Adelaide College of The Arts (AC Arts) and has trained in Viewpoints, Suzuki and Composition with Tina Mitchell, Zen Zen Zo and SITI Company. Charles currently maintains substantial practices in both Adelaide and Sydney.
Charles has worked in the arts since the age of 5; first as a classical boy soprano, then as a musical theatre performer, an actor, and since 2010 as a director and producer.
In 2010 Charles established ‘Early Worx’, a company he served as Artistic Director of for four years. During his time there the company created 10 works, 3 return seasons, and toured to the Edinburgh Fringe. Their numerous awards included Charles’ 2011 receipt of the Adelaide Critics Circle Emerging Artist of the Year.
Works with that company included: As Director: The Laramie Project - Ten Years Later, Seven Jewish Children, Like A Fishbone, Modern American Masters: Durang, Mamet, LaButte and a multi award-winning production of Joanna Murray-Smith’s Love Child, as well as many devised works. As writer & performer Charles created two original Cabaret’s with the company: A Modest Exhibit and Queer.
Charles served as director and dramaturge on Trans Scripts for Paul Lucas Productions (NYC), an on-again-off-again engagement lasting over two years and including developments and performances in New York, New Jersey, Dorset, London, and Adelaide.
Charles has worked extensively as a freelance director including for Opera Australia (2nd Assistant Director, Cosi Fan Tutte, dir. Sir David McVicar) State Theatre Company SA (assistant director, Maggie Stone, dir. Geordie Brookman) Lambert House Enterprises (Flood) ActNow (co-director, Zero Feet Away) and as a teaching-director in the tertiary acting course at AC Arts (Mother Courage, O Go My Man, Slavs, 5 Years).
Charles also regularly teaches acting and directing at AC Arts (undergraduate and open programs) and NIDA (postgraduate and open programs).
In late 2014, with dancer/choreographer (and sister) Eliza Sanders, Charles established this new company. ‘House Of Sand’ creates work through and across art-forms including dance, theatre, cabaret and visual art. The company’s first three works Pedal.Peddle, Castles and Knitting While Sleeping - all choreographed by Eliza Sanders with Charles serving as dramaturge - have toured throughout Australia and New Zealand and brought the company substantial critical and popular acclaim, and accolades including the Wellington Fringe Festival Most Promising Emerging Company award, and a nomination for Best in Fringe at that same festival.
The company are currently in development of four new works Sham Pain; a dance/theatre work inspired by the work and life of artist Francis Bacon, Feet.Us; an expansion on the ideas of Knitting While Sleeping, Romeo & Juliet & Genocide; a live art montage of violent love and lovely violence; and Welcome the Bright World; a newly visceral production of Stephen Sewell's neglected classic about physics, the intelligence state and identity politics. And the company's first foray back to Charles' area of deepest expertise - aggressively political, text-driven, theatre.

BONUS! Congratulations on getting this far down the page. You get extra content.
I wouldn't call myself a regular blogger, but sometimes I think things, and slightly less frequently I write them down. Slightly less frequently again than that I post them here, for those of you who're interested to have a gander at.
Things I tend to write about:
theatre & the arts (funnily enough)
the never-ending zoo-monkey shit-fight that is Australian politics
gender, sexuality and queer thinking things
